Anyone who trains on 3G pitches, astro turf, tatami, or rollout mats knows the exact sting of a friction injury. Wide, weeping, full of grit, and agonizing in the shower for the next four days.

The problem is that a standard first aid kit is built for paper cuts, not turf burns. A 3G burn or astro burn is a completely different job. These injuries often cover a whole thigh or forearm. They need proper flushing before anything goes near them, and ordinary gauze will bond to the raw wound, tearing off the new skin when you try to pull it away.

We put together the specialist kit bag essential that actually matches the injury. This kit cleans and covers turf, astro, and mat burns properly: sterile saline to flush out the grit, cooling gel for the raw sting, and non-adherent dressings that lift off cleanly when it is time for a change. It all lives in a clear box that fits perfectly in your kit bag, so you always know what is left without having to open it.

What’s in the Box

  • Normasol sterile saline sachet (25ml): For irrigating the wound and flushing out 3G rubber crumb, grit, and debris.

  • Sterile saline wipes x2: For cleaning the intact skin around the injury.

  • Burn gel sachets x2: Cooling hydrogel specifically for the raw, stinging areas of a friction burn.

  • Non-adherent dressings (10cm x 10cm) x2: Sized for the big ones like thighs, hips, and forearms.

  • Non-adherent dressings (5cm x 5cm) x2: Perfect for turf burns on knees, elbows, and knuckles.

  • Microporous tape (2.5cm x 5m): Holds a dressing securely on an awkward curve without pulling the skin.

  • Assorted fabric plasters x10: For all the smaller scrapes and grazes.

  • Nitrile gloves (1 pair): For keeping things hygienic when you are patching up a teammate.

Note: All sterile items are CE/UKCA marked and supplied by a UK medical manufacturer.

How to Treat an Astro or 3G Burn

  1. Flush it first: Use the saline to wash the grit and debris out. Everyone skips this step, but it is the one that matters most—especially on 3G where rubber crumb easily gets embedded in an astro burn.

  2. Clean around it: Use the saline wipes for the surrounding intact skin.

  3. Cool the sting: Apply the burn gel over the raw area for immediate relief before dressing it.

  4. Cover it properly: Place a non-adherent dressing over the wound itself, ensuring it covers the whole area, then tape all four edges down securely.

  5. Change when wet or dirty: Keep the wound environment clean. Do not leave it for a week just because you cannot be bothered.

Who It’s For

  • Rugby and football players sliding on 3G and astro turf.

  • Grapplers, MMA fighters, and wrestlers picking up mat burns.

  • Coaches and parents who want a practical solution ready in the kit bag.

  • Clubs looking for sensible, sport-specific first aid on the sideline.

Why You Need a Specific Kit

You could build something like this yourself from a local chemist, and if you have the time, you should. But most people do not. They end up slapping a standard plaster onto a turf burn the size of a beer mat—or using nothing at all—and then wonder why it is still weeping on Thursday. This kit gives you exactly the right tools, in the right sizes, inside one compact box that lives in your bag.

"Turf burns and 3G abrasions are notoriously difficult to manage because of the rubber crumb, sweat, and friction debris embedded during a slide. The immediate priority is high-volume irrigation followed by a non-adherent protective barrier. We designed this kit to give players exactly what they need to safely treat these specific friction injuries right on the touchline." — Dr. Asoka, Medical Officer

Suspect an Infection?

This kit cleans and covers friction burns. That is what it is for, and that is all it does. It will not cure an existing infection. If you cannot get the grit out, if the redness is spreading, if an injury isn't settling, or if you feel unwell in yourself, that is a conversation for a pharmacist, a GP, or 111—not a kit bag.
